- Chunkier Applesauce
Cortlands are a red streaked apple, with crisper flesh than the McIntosh. They hold their shape better, making them my preferred apple for pies and baking. They are naturally slower to brown, making them great for baking and in salads or sliced for fresh snacking. They're awesome paired with cheese.
They don't store as well as some other apple varieties and should be used within the next few weeks. This is the best apple for freezing. We like to use them now to make apple pies for the holidays. We just freeze the uncooked pie and pull it out of the freezer the day before we want to bake it.
